Dean Humphrey Outdoor Project of the Year Humphrey Homes HIA Award winner Grovedale Road Floreat

Designing and building beautiful and functional outdoor spaces is something we love doing in collaboration with our clients, and that level of teamwork and creativity has been awarded by the Housing Industry Association.

Our Grovedale Road home in Floreat has been judged the best in Perth by the HIA at their recent 2017 Housing Industry Association Awards.

Our work on the Floreat custom home was named as Outdoor Project of the Year and you can see why with the gallery here.

Director Dean Humphrey said the awards were a nice way to celebrate the design and build of the home which had the sole priority of simply making the clients happy by delivering a space that was inviting and entertaining all at once.

“In our gorgeous climate, we spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s really become a room in its own right,” Mr Humphrey said.

“For that reason, this is one of the most competitive award categories so for our project to take out the title of the year’s best is very humbling, particularly as the award was never our focus.”

Mr Humphrey said seamless design was instrumental in making the home work.

“What we find is that if you don’t treat the outdoor space as part of the overall, holistic design, it can sometimes be delivered as a bit of an adjunct or afterthought and adopting that mentality will just never work.

“What we wanted to do was create an integrated indoor/outdoor space that added understated elegance and function all in one.

“We did that in a number of ways, the most noticeable visually was by extending the bold vertical and horizontal lines that form such a key part of the overall design.

“The architecture of the home is characterised by the flat roof and bold lines that run vertically over two storeys with 13 steel piers spanning the entire height of the home.   That then extends to the central courtyard with the intersecting horizontal and vertical timber arbour that cover the area and provide added shade and personality with a climbing vine.

“Plus we used an extensive use of glass on both levels at the rear of the home which wraps around the courtyard so you feel connected to the outdoors even when you are standing inside the main part of the home.”
