As we sit down to write this testimonial and reflect on the past three years, it’s surprisingly difficult to find the words to express just how grateful we are.

The material palette, the incredible attention to detail in the joinery, and all of those subtle “one-percenters” elevate every space. What we love most is that while the home feels refined and sophisticated, it also feels warm, welcoming, and completely unpretentious. The seamless flow of the spaces and the thoughtfully curated materials create an immediate sense of calm every time we walk through the door. And the marble throughout the home still makes my heart skip a beat every single time I see it.

The execution of the build has been nothing short of exceptional. The level of care and craftsmanship shown throughout the entire process left us speechless on more than one occasion. Humphrey Homes attention to detail is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced, and the finished home is a true reflection of their pride in their work, with special mention to Dave and Jamie.

From the very beginning, Humphrey Homes truly stood out as the builder of choice for us. We first noticed them when they built the house next door – every trade was there like clockwork, early and punctual, and that level of professionalism immediately impressed us.

Seeing the finished homes, including our neighbour’s and several others at Home Opens, completely won us over. The attention to detail, the stylish design, and the sheer craftsmanship were second to none – absolutely beautiful.

From the bottom of our hearts, we are forever grateful to Dean and the Humphrey Homes’ team for taking over our build. Starting with only the slab and a feature wall, the HH team went to work, taking on the plans and the partially started build as their own, whilst bringing in their genuine enthusiasm, style and flair.

Now the home is nearly completed, and it looks truly amazing. We couldn’t be happier with the wonderful experience we’ve had with HH. This was our first build. We engaged Humphrey Homes on recommendation and after visiting several of their completed homes, where the quality of workmanship was evident throughout.

We couldn’t find a suitable existing home that matched what we had in mind for our forever home, and we weren’t prepared to compromise on what was available in existing builds.

Humphrey Homes met our expectations across every aspect of the build — design, communication, and execution. Communication throughout the process was consistently excellent. Concerns were never dismissed or explained away — even when they were minor or ultimately unnecessary, they were always treated with respect. The team maintained a friendly, solutions-focused approach at every stage. The standards they set for themselves consistently exceeded what we expected, which gave us confidence throughout the process.

Dean was gracious and flexible when adjustments were needed. He worked closely with us to meet our needs, and his approach was collaborative, constructive, and shaped the culture of the wider team. Dean maintained a professional approach but also took the time to understand us personally, which made discussions easier and decisions more straightforward.

Helen’s architecture showed deep insight into our background and translating vague ideas into a cohesive design. From sketches on butchers’ paper to a finished concept, her work was intelligent, intuitive, and completely tailored. She hit the brief perfectly and delivered a timeless home — not led by fashion, but built around how we live. It fits us and the landscape it sits within, and feels like it truly belongs. Helen delivered a home with excellent solar performance, artful air movement, clever use of natural light, and strong insulation qualities — a thoughtful and efficient design that shows a high level of skill and intent. The sharpie sketch we started with now stands as a home that exceeds anything we could have imagined on our own.

Gavin, our Project Supervisor, had a sharp ability to anticipate challenges well in advance and make technical decisions that prevented issues before they arose. He demanded high-quality work from all trades and issued corrections where required — always with the end result in mind, not just the bottom line. His foresight and planning ensured there were no compounding errors or surprises. The build ran cleanly from start to finish — a credit to his project control.

Competence in this role is critical, and Gavin’s performance confirmed how essential effective site supervision is to the success of a build.

Joie led the interior design process and was a pleasure to work with. She brought sound design judgement, supported by her art background and a solid understanding of how spaces should look and function. Beyond selecting finishes, she had an ability to see how elements work together to create a cohesive whole — and she brought this to the interiors with suggestions that significantly elevated the outcome. Her input gave us confidence to make some clear decisions, including a few we wouldn’t have considered without her guidance. We were very impressed with the result, which is a clear reflection of her ability.

The trades on site were friendly, highly skilled and clearly selected for their craftsmanship. Their standard of work allowed the next trade to begin without compromise, keeping the build flowing and removing delays. No excuses. Just quiet pride in the work. The benefit of this showed in the consistency of finish and the calm pace of the entire job. The build timeline was exactly as promised. Progress was steady and well-managed, with no delays and no dramas. The build was seamless, with consistent momentum and barely a day without activity. Every step was well-timed and efficiently executed.

The final cost of the build came in under 3% of the original quote, despite being subject to provisional allowances. These allowances were fair and gave us enough flexibility to make quality choices without being cornered into upgrades. The budgeting process was transparent and professionally handled from start to finish.

The quality of construction exceeded our expectations. Structural engineering was clearly a priority, and that gave us confidence. Heavy reinforcement, above-standard inclusions, and specialist attention to concrete curing have delivered a robust, long-term build. This is a house designed not just to look good but to endure. That level of care doesn’t happen by accident — it reflects a business that values detail, accountability, and doing things properly.

Dean often says the success of a build is measured by whether you feel like having a champagne at the end. For us, it wasn’t just the end — it was every stage. Each milestone felt like progress worth celebrating. We wanted the building process to be an enjoyable one, and Humphrey Homes made sure it was. They earned our trust early and never gave us a reason to question it.

Humphrey Builders – Design Process

I would like to re-‐cap our journey and share my experiences, working with Humphrey Builders to design and build our family home in Archdeacon Street in Nedlands.

We selected Humphrey Builders to manage the design and execution of our home based on a number of factors. Of course, these included the standard of the build and the value for money we would achieve but of particular importance to us was a need to have confidence that we could rely on one specific person (being Dean Humphrey) to be accountable to us throughout the process and execute the job to our expectations.

While we researched many options for building our home, we were impressed with the look, feel and finish delivered in the Humphrey Homes. The designers that Dean works with offer beautiful, original homes with the clean lines and our experiences from viewing completed homes, confirmed that the high quality finishes achieved by Humphrey really appealed to us. We were also impressed with the personal accountability that Dean took on each of his work sites. It was clear to us that he was integral to each of the builds.

Humphrey Builders – Build Process

I’m told that it’s a universal feeling among home builders that everything takes so long and you only know at the end of the process all the things you wish you knew when you started. This is true and like others, we found the build process somewhat frustrating as we waited for our house to appear. However, we were confident that there was a critical path being followed and we were kept updated on key events and decision points well in advance of any requirements for us to act.

We were also fortunate to have the support and eye for detail within the Humphrey Homes team, to identify any potential issue before it because one. Sometimes this may have been a vanity selection that was in fact not going to fit the space, sometimes the placement of a cupboard. Each time there was an issue to manage, it would be brought to our attention with a proposal on how to resolve. It was clear that the Humphrey team had heard us when we said at commencement “please don’t come to us with problems, you are the experts, we want you to come to us with solutions”.

Humphrey Builders – Final Product

On completion of our home we were thrilled. We had lived interstate for most of the build, so to finally be in the house was fantastic. The spaces felt wonderful and the little decisions we had made along the way had all come together in a beautiful flow through the home.

People frequently ask me what I would change if I had my time again but I can honestly say that there’s nothing that readily comes to mind. Whilst I’m sure there are little things that I’ve learnt from living here, there’s certainly been no burning issue of an area we wanted one way and never got to achieve. The experience of living in the house has been the realisation of all the up front effort put in to select the right materials, achieve the right floor plan and take advice on the things we knew nothing about.

I’m so proud of our home and am delighted when it receives compliments. I also know that those compliments belong to the team at Humphrey Homes, who have always been so lovely and so happy to offer help whenever it’s needed. I really enjoy letting them know when some new compliment comes our way – because it’s a testament to all our work together to build this great home. We’ve had the house described to us on more than one occasion as being easily the best house in the street and the most beautiful new build in Nedlands – so who wouldn’t want to share that feedback??

This is a belated but very heart-felt letter from Suz and me to thank you and your team for the wonderful job that you did for us in building 26 Boreham St.

You have worked with us to create a great home that is truly more than a simple building, but also a reflection of our family and how we live. It is a great joy to us and sharing it with friends such as Chiara and yourself is the largest part of this. It is our dream home, and a great shame or irony that the “dream” was so short as we headed off to new adventures; we will sorely miss drinking wine and sharing a bbq with you and Chiara on the back deck with the doors open.

Your team has done a wonderful job for us in delivering the house. Please pass on our thanks to Kerri, Dean Smith, Neville, Dave, Luke and all the others that have been involved. We greatly appreciate everyone’s efforts; Kerri’s thoughtful design improvements and care, Neville, Dean and Dave’s delivery and craftsmanship and Luke’s horticulture … to deliver so much to a client who sometimes would have seemed to not be paying attention is a great tribute to all. Following completing of the renovation, the choice of Humphrey Homes as our architect and builder for our new home on a block we had purchased was obvious. We had plenty of ideas and images which we had collected over a period of time that had to be interpreted and transformed into the design for our dream home.

Humphrey Homes designed and built a stunning architect designed home at our property in Floreat.

The design process was much less daunting than we had expected. The discussions were inclusive and the contributions from Dean, Helen, the interior designer and other team members were interesting and constructive. We felt informed throughout and it was satisfying to deal with a team who seemed as enthusiastic about our project as we were.

The final design was a fantastic interpretation of our brief. The house encapsulates the “box of light” concept; there is natural light from various different aspects in every room, but without any sense of exposure. The varying levels of the house make excellent use of the sloping block and the outdoor spaces and pool flow naturally from the indoor living areas. The Humphrey Homes team were always approachable and it was a pleasure to deal with them from start to finish.

The house is full of beautiful and practical design features that we love, from the rammed concrete wall with seamlessly inset tall windows to the stunning columns bisecting the stairwell over two levels. The quality of the finishes is excellent! – and extra features like the polished plaster walls and the striking patterned tiles lining the kitchen island bench bring a neutral colour palette to life. Fine details like shadow-line ceilings and quality cabinetry add finesse.

We would recommend Humphrey Homes without hesitation.

Dear Dean,

Thank you and your team for making the entire design and building process relatively stress free. It is my pleasure to recommend Humphrey Homes to others.

Having never had a home built before I was apprehensive about doing so. After a period of research I chose Humphrey Homes because of their reputation as a high quality builder.

I wanted an architect designed home so that it met my own particular tastes and requirements. This included: design features that would cater for my latter years as I become less mobile; be predominantly single level; maximize the northern light; have the feeling of space; and externally be visually in keeping with the classic homes in the area.

The design process was exceptional, their in-house architect listened and understood exactly what I wanted to achieve and the final design exceeded my expectations. The end result is a home that is classy, practical, and functional and a pleasure to live in. I still don’t quite believe that this wonderful home is mine.

The process from initial planning through demolition, building and completion ran efficiently and effectively. I was impressed with the customer focused approach particularly when occasional concerns arose, there was always a solution presented which guaranteed customer satisfaction.

The Humphrey Homes staff are amazing and without exception went out of their way to make sure I understood the various concepts or features presented before I made a decision. Testimonial for Humphrey Homes

Shortly after arriving in Perth, nearly 12 years ago, I cut out an article from the newspaper about a house in Cottesloe that had been renovated by Dean Humphrey. I was struck by the quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail which in the boom of 2006 seemed to often be lacking elsewhere. I resolved that if we were ever in the position to pursue an architect build I would engage Humphrey Homes.

Ten years later we were looking to build a timeless weatherboard Plantation style home and Humphrey Homes remained the obvious choice. Not only had they continued to build high quality homes but they were the only builder in Perth I had seen build an authentic weatherboard house (rather than just cladding stuck to brick).

Having access to Dean, the builder, and Helen, the architect, in the same room throughout the design stage made it a fully collaborative and interactive experience. Helen quickly comprehended the feel of home we were aiming for and Dean gave immediate feedback on practical and cost implications of creative ideas we were discussing.

The team at Humphrey Homes work seamlessly to not only provide the best experience possible for customers but individually contribute to the improving the final result. The thought of designing and building our own home seemed completely overwhelming. Time poor, and lacking in inspiration, we were reluctant to commit to a process we felt would be labour-intensive and require a significant financial outlay.

Having spent many years living in older homes, we thought purchasing a newer home and renovating would be a more manageable endeavour. However, we could never find a home we both liked, or one that required minimal renovating.

We had heard about Humphrey Homes through friends, who were impressed with the clever design and thoughtful layout of their homes. We had concerns about enlisting a smaller builder, and worried that our budget would very quickly be exceeded. We decided to meet with a few builders, including Humphrey Homes, and then make a decision.

After meeting with Dean, he invited us to view a few of their recently completed homes. One home in particular, impressed us with its simple, but timeless design and open-plan layout. We assumed it had been recently completed, but after speaking with the owners we discovered that the home had been completed 10-years prior! From that point on, we were sold on Humphrey Homes. We were so impressed with Dean’s humble approach, and the fact that their homes continued to display a timeless design and well-built construct, 10-years after completion. Testament to the quality of the build!

We had lived in enough homes to know what we wanted, and yet once the process was under way, we ended up with something completely different… and so much better than we’d expected. We wanted a modern home, which wouldn’t date. Minimalist in its design; understated in its appearance. We wanted a single storey home that was open-plan and made the most of natural light, but still maintained privacy. We had a long and proportionately narrow block, which we didn’t want compromising the design, or functionality, of our new home and garden.

The benefit of Humphrey Homes was their team orientated approach and their inclusion of design, build and fit-out under one roof. We found this organisational structure to significantly minimise delays and miscommunications. Everyone was on the same page.

Dean managed the Humphrey Homes team, and supervised timelines, Gantt charts, and budgets. He ensured that each component of the design, build and fit-out integrated seamlessly to achieve a home that remained within budget and was completed on time. Dean’s approach was inclusive and transparent. He arranged regular meetings to keep us informed, and unlike many builders, invited us to make regular visits to the home during its build. Dean was approachable and easy to discuss issues with. He managed conflicting interests promptly and professionally. It was reassuring to know that there was one person we could approach regarding any concern, who would manage the situation effectively, maintaining honesty and integrity, and achieve a win-win situation for all parties.

Helen, the architect, came to our home to discuss and brainstorm ideas. She wanted to know which aspects of our existing homes we liked and wanted to maintain, and which aspects we wanted to avoid in the future. She recommended measuring out existing rooms to give us a visual reference for the dimensions in our new home. She demonstrated insight into the constraints of our old home, and suggested several alternatives to make better use of space and natural light. Helen ensured that the design of our home wasn’t compromised by our elongated block. She made effective use of the northern sun in winter, and minimised the intrusion of the western sun in summer. She made clever use of the surrounds, to maximise natural light without compromising privacy. Her ideas were fresh and innovative, and demonstrated her skill and creativity as an architect. Her effortless ability to make alterations in design to achieve improved flow and functionality, provided us with the assurance that the home we were building would meet our requirements for the next 20 plus years.

Frank, the site supervisor, was always happy for us to drop by unannounced and get updates on how things were progressing. Frank’s approach was calm and systematic. Always professional, Frank instilled enormous confidence in us. He was able to keep things on track, but never at the expense of quality or attention to detail. He led by example, and was hard working and meticulous in his own work. This followed through in the work ethos of his team. It was obvious watching Frank on site, that he was a well-respected leader, and we took great comfort in the knowledge that operations under his management would be completed to a level beyond our expectations.

One of our greatest concerns about building a home was the decision-making process surrounding interior and exterior selections. Humphrey Homes were more than happy to work with the contractors we enlisted, but were equally comfortable in recommending contractors, if we had no preference. Both the interior designer and landscaper enlisted by Humphrey Homes quickly gained insight into the style and vision we had for our home and garden. Our main objective for the garden was to achieve a low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing garden, which maximised open space in the rear garden, but created interest in the front garden and courtyard. The landscapers did an excellent job at meeting our requirements.

Overall, we were impressed with the cohesiveness of the Humphrey Homes team, and their genuine interest in achieving the best outcome for their clients. We had complete confidence in every individual’s ability. We were included in every decision-making process, no matter how small, and if we had no preference, or became over whelmed with the choice on offer, Humphrey Homes were happy to provide advice and assistance.

What has impressed us the most is the after sales service we have received from Humphrey Homes. Since the completion of our home nearly 18-months ago, we have continued to receive outstanding customer service and follow up care. As to be expected, minor things have needed adjusting over the “settling in period”, and Humphrey Homes has been prompt and professional in their approach. We have been amazed by their after sales service and continued eagerness to impress, even 18-months after the completion of our home.

We made the decision to build once. It was a decision we’re happy we made. We have no regrets, and I can honestly say we have complete admiration for our builder. Not many can say that!

Humphrey Homes did such a brilliant job in creating and completing our dream home, that we won’t be building again for at least another 20 plus years!

This is not our first build of a new home but it is certainly intended to be our last and it is a great note on which to have finished. The whole experience from start to finish has been both stress-free and exciting.

We were looking for a simple but interesting home designed specifically for our needs and interests and were keen to have high quality finish and low maintenance. That has most certainly been delivered and we are delighted with the end result.

The innovative way in which architect Helen Marchesani achieved a wonderful indoor-outdoor flow is one of the features we enjoy most and that also lends itself well to entertaining with larger numbers of guests.

While the design and build were underway, we moved to live in Yallingup. This presented no problem as the Humphrey Homes team kept communication excellent throughout.

Importantly, we established a high level of confidence in the interior design advice from Joie Stevenson (and not only because of her excellent surname J) and that eased much of the decision-making process. We were highly impressed as Joie was always ready to go that extra proactive step when her active mind saw something even better than that which we had already agreed was satisfactory.

Building supervisor and master juggler, Frank Petruzio, was on the ball all the time and we were left with a comfortable feeling throughout.

No building project goes without a few extra challenges or surprises. What makes the difference between one builder and another is the reaction when something unforeseen does crop up. We were never disappointed in the responses we received from Dean and everyone in the team.

Dean Humphrey and his excellent team delivered as promised on the contract and we would have no hesitation in recommending Humphrey Homes to anyone looking for a great building experience.

Building my home with Humphrey Homes has been a fun, seamless and ultimately very rewarding process.

After just a few meetings, it was amazing how quickly the very basic concept in my mind evolved into the house I wanted to live in. The value of having it architecturally designed stood out in the way in which elements of the block were utilised to maximise the key aspects of the build.

Having the expertise of an interior designer added that extra element of style to the house and suited my desire to minimise the amount of time I spent looking at products and making decisions.

The amount of care given to the build by all who worked on it meant that I had no need to constantly check on the progress other than for my own enjoyment.

The care given to the construction process was evident at every step and the build took the intended amount of time, not even skipping a beat in the face of a pandemic.

Building with Dean has been a positive and enjoyable experience with faultless service throughout.

Everything was streamlined and very efficient. The design and build experience has been absolutely superb!

We built a downsizer specifically for us in that we wanted our entire living area including the master bedroom on the ground level. With the in-house architect Helen Marchesani’s knowledge and skill, our plan came together seemingly effortlessly.

The assistance from in-house interior designer Joie Stevenson made things even easier and so much better for us.

We don’t think we could have made some of our decisions without her help! We would have been totally overwhelmed and so feeling very grateful for that added element which finishes our home to a great standard that we love.

Although a relatively small home, there is a level of detail that required careful consideration in design and supervision.

We cannot speak highly enough of Dave Steenson, our supervisor. He had a relaxed but diligent attitude and we would often see him after the trades had left just wandering around the house checking the fine detail to ensure nothing had been overlooked or to think through potential problems that may arise.

The trades were most competent and always courteous and pleasant to deal with. Often neighbours and people who passed by commented on the clean site and the quiet behaviour of the trades and good traffic management.

The level of perseverance with trades to ensure the Humphrey Homes quality was maintained was ever present.

We are delighted with our home and it is a pleasure to live in a light bright space which flows from indoors to outdoors.

Hi Dean

It has now been several weeks since we accepted the keys to our home enabling Faye and I to move in and commence to benefit and enjoy the results of several years of planning as well as a lifetime of experience we drew upon to determine how we wanted to live.

This time has also provided an opportunity to reflect upon the whole process from early engagement with you and your team where we were able to sit with the Builder and Architect to work through and discuss a concept and then develop plans which reflected our requirements.

The benefit of working directly with the Builder and in-house Architect ensured ownership of outcomes where design challenges were addressed and agreed at an early stage which then flowed through the building process extinguishing interface challenges between owners architect and builder with the added benefit of preventing delays to the building schedule.

We also look back and acknowledge the further benefit and advantages of working with Humphrey Homes where your in-house interior designer was available early, therefore greatly assisted us to select products and finishes which reduced our concerns about what would work and wouldn’t work in the completed home.

Once again, having these in-house services ensured the team were working together during the build process and I am sure preventing delays to the building schedule as well as potential costly rework through changes being made on the run.

We would like to also acknowledge and recognise the detailed attention of site supervisor Dave who was completely across every aspect of the build process and schedule. He was contactable at any time to discuss any queries we had plus he called us to question concerns or options he identified which would enhance the final product.

Your subcontractor trade teams were well experienced in building the Humphrey Homes way and when we look back this ensured we could sleep at night knowing full well our house would be a home we could enjoy for years to come.

Faye and I discussed on many occasions about how we could simply describe the building process with you and your team, and we have settled upon the following: Open, Honest, Easy.

I considered lots of different options for designing and building my home, including independent architects, but was attracted to the idea of having an architect and builder in the same company working together from the start of the project and Humphrey Homes seemed the obvious choice.

When I met with Helen I felt like she immediately understood what I was trying to achieve and was able to translate these ideas to a great design which really suits my lifestyle and works on the block.

Likewise, Joie and Katie have been brilliant at taking my ideas for the interior design and coming up with great options which made the process of choosing materials and fittings enjoyable, rather than overwhelming.

As an architect specialising in large highly complex projects I realised that we weregoing to need a good residential architect to help us design our dream home.

We interviewed a few architects thinking we would go the conventional design and tender route. Having an architect we could work with and who could coalesce our design priorities with their vision was critical for us. Also, to us it seemed that going with an architect/builder company would help reduce how much time we needed to spend on the project, so we decided to look at architect/builder companies.

We met Dean at one of his Home Opens for a new house he’d built for our old neighbours. They were very complimentary about their experience with HH so we set up a meeting with Dean and Helen. It was strange to be on the other side of the design table as a client and working with Helen was a good experience. Throughout design and construction Helen has been enthusiastic and approachable about the design of the house.

Deciding to build with an architect/builder company was really about three priorities: firstly; a good architect that we could work with, secondly; a reputable company with a good track record of satisfied clients, and thirdly; value for money. It was easy scoping out Dean’s reputation. The responses were consistent “He’s a good operator/guy” was the common response. That also sums up our experience with HH. Dean and Helen have been great to work with.

No building project is without challenges and our house also had its share of headaches, however these were all resolved without fuss. The sudden increase in subcontractor rates and material prices started hitting WA just as we were about to start construction. Although this no doubt had an impact on Dean’s costs, our contract pricing remained mostly unchanged. Variations are a part of almost all building contracts. In our case most of our variations were due to our initial allowances being a bit low or us upgrading specifications or selections.

Our situation in terms of involvement in the design was a little unconventional and probably created some challenges for everyone. Overall, we’re really happy with our house and our experience with HH.

Well, where do we start…. WOW, OMG, it’s absolutely amazing! The words we used as the final reveal took place. However, words rarely do justice to the real feelings and emotions you truly have when your dreams are realised.

Her amiable nature truly made every interaction with her a pleasure, turning what could have been a daunting process into a wonderfully engaging journey.

Interior Design 

Katie equally talented, warm and friendly, led our interior design and immediately provided the guidance to ensure our selections were aligned to the overall aesthetic and design theme we were seeking.  Katie’s visionary expertise and meticulous attention to detail enabled us to maintain the high-end quality throughout the home right through to final staging. Joie’s talent and experience was leant on at numerous stages as she managed other projects however her support to Katie and us at various stages was crucial to bring the entire home to completion.  Together, they crafted a remarkable space.  Their combined efforts created an outstanding interior design experience.

Build Quality 

Probably the most significant feature of a Humphrey Homes built home is the overall build quality. Gavin’s uncompromising commitment to best practise and standards is a credit to him as a Construction Manager and this was evident through every stage of our build.  Whilst Gavin has a fantastic support team it’s easy to understand why Dean trusts Gavin with his reputation as a builder.  

Today we look back on our decision to trust Dean and the team at Humphrey Homes and we can say without any hesitation that our decision was fully ratified.  The entire process and journey was a consultative one that was presented from day one.

OCEAN REACH ON ODERN – A BUILDING PROJECT BY HUMPHREY HOMES

As the build approaches lockup my overriding feeling is that of calm confidence. Observing the mechanics of how the team at HH works to address the challenges and changes on the build, I feel so fortunate in the choice of Humphrey Homes. This sense of confidence has grown since my initial chats with Dean and Helen as I contemplated buying a block of land that people had told me was “unbuildable”.

Dean Humphrey is excited about what he does. At our initial meeting he impressed me with his knowledge about cutting edge processes and approaches to building. He didn’t blink an eye when I said I didn’t want to build a brick/render house. He simply told me about some wonderful construction innovations he had learned about on recent trips to Europe and the USA, including modern timber framing systems. Dean has assembled a team who I have found to be exceptionally talented. When you select HH as your architect and builder you are getting a total integrated package. It has been my experience that the team is tight, they talk constantly and work collaboratively to solve problems. They also seem to like each other, and you can feel that positive energy when you visit the office.

Working with architect Helen Marchesani and her magic black pen was, honestly, breathtaking. Helen has such a positive approach and creative eye. “There is always a way” is her mantra. Watching what were once just black marks on white paper turn into my home, I am in awe of Helen’s vision and talent. I also appreciate that she listened to my dreams and hopes for how this house would be lived in and would meet the needs of my family over the coming years. I can feel how well she did this as I walk through the spaces as they take physical shape. As the project develops she is constantly involved, tweaking finer details to ensure the overall result is just as perfect as can be.

Is there any conflict between having an in-house Interior Designer and achieving a home reflecting individual tastes and aesthetic? No. Any such little doubts I may have had have been replaced by grateful appreciation for Joie’s eye for detail and her open approach, coupled with amazing knowledge and tenacious skills in seeking fixtures and designing spaces. Making the selections has been lots of fun – like shopping with a girlfriend who has fabulous taste and knows all the best shops. I can’t wait to see all the elements come together.

Going on site throughout the build I always feel welcome. The skilled guys with the hammers and saws are friendly and keen to share stories of the build with some healthy complaints about tricky elements dreamed up by architects. The build supervisor -Millimetre Dave – has always been available to answer questions and keep me up to date with progress. And I know things will be millimetre perfect.

I initially contacted HH after a friend recommended Helen as a wonderful architect. At that point I wasn’t aware of the integrated nature of the business model. But it is a brilliant approach and I wouldn’t build any other way. From the first I have felt that every staff member at HH is almost as excited about the building of my house as I am. From a site that presented lots of challenges due to its location and size I can hardly believe how gorgeous the house is going to be. I pinch myself every time I climb onto the champagne terrace and gaze across at the view.

We are delighted to share our experience working with the Humphrey Homes who designed and built our new house in Cottesloe.

We selected Humphrey Homes for many reasons, with the primary reason being the quality of finish observed during a number of displays of earlier Humphrey Homes projects. Our house was similarly finished with exemplary quality in terms of craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Dean Humphrey is very proud of the Humphrey Homes brand and he protects the brand by delivering to the client what was promised at the design stage. Part of Dean’s pitch is that he lives local to his clients and therefore is interested in maintaining good client relationships. We actually found this to be absolutely true.

The Humphrey Homes team, especially architect Helen, interior designer Joie, and building supervisor Dave, were excellent to work with. We believe our ideas, concerns and requests were listened to, considered and implemented responsively. Honest feedback was also provided by the team where it was felt our ideas were not sympathetic to the intent of the design.

The project was undertaken entirely during the Covid pandemic. We suffered inevitable delays due to unavailability of labour and materials. This presented challenges to both client and builder. Nevertheless all Humphrey Homes representatives maintained an impressive level of professionalism.

Our observation is that our delay was significantly less than similar projects under other building companies at the same time. This is testament to the good relationship that Humphrey Homes enjoys with its sub-contractors whom were proven to generally be reliable and respectful.

The high-quality finish is in large part the result of almost all tradesmen showing care in their product. Most trades have been working with Humphrey Homes over the long term, suggesting that they have been selectively retained based on the pride in their own workmanship.

We now have our dream home, built exactly as we had dreamt. Thank you to Humphrey Homes for turning our dreams into reality. We look forward to spending many happy years in this beautiful home. Thank you to Dean and especially his outstanding team.

Hi Dean (and all your staff too!),

It has been an absolute pleasure building with Humphrey Homes, right from the start of the journey through to collecting the keys just a couple of days ago!

This was the third build of our lives, and we can say quite emphatically that this was by far the easiest and most pleasurable experience of the three!

There were a number of factors that made the journey with Humphrey Homes so special, and we both thought it was important that we explain why, as we know that building a home can be one of the most stressful and challenging events of one’s life!

What made the experience so different was the fact that Humphrey Homes not only built us an exceptional home, but they built us a home that delivered exactly what we wanted in a home.

As someone I met along the way and who has been associated with Dean and his team for a number of years said: “Humphrey Homes don’t build homes that all look like Humphrey Homes houses, they build homes that look like homes designed and built for the families that live in them! Each home is completely unique!”

The reasons for this are many and for others who do consider building with Humphrey Homes, we feel compelled to let you know why:

Humphrey Homes offers a wholistic approach to building a home, which is completely different to most other builders.

In previous builds we engaged with separate companies to design the home, build the home and then others to help with interior design. Whilst this approach can work and to some extent worked for us in the past, we found this approach to be highly stressful and quite difficult to co-ordinate. It didn’t always deliver the intended cohesion from design, to construction, through to the interior finish.

What Humprey Homes was able to offer us was an in-house experience that encompassed every aspect of the build; starting with early conceptual planning, through to final architectural drawings, then on to the build itself and along the way, the selection of materials accompanied with in-house expertise in interior design. By providing this level of service, the normal level of stress associated with building a home was eliminated and the time savings that flowed from this process were really evident.

The team at Humphrey Homes is also a key factor in delivering this experience and the wonderful outcome that is our home today. The level of workmanship and finishing is absolutely exquisite.

We complete the home having made friends with everyone involved in the process: Helen our architect, Joie, our interior designer, Gavin our site supervisor, Steve our manager of costing and variations and Dean the owner – and even all the subbies who worked on aspects of the home.

Everyone we met along the way only had good things to say about working for Humphrey Homes, their care and attention to the outcome was highly evident! I know from experience working in my own businesses that this does not happen by chance!

Joie, who worked with Sue and I throughout the entire build process, just made things easy for us. We never had the stress of spending weekends arguing between ourselves (I am sure everyone has been there!!), about material and product selections. Joie as a professional interior designer provided the advice, limited the choices to products, colours and materials that just worked! Sue and Joie had a lot of fun I know!

Just when we thought we were done, Humphrey Homes offered us another gem. They offered us a furniture selection service where, what we chose attracted a builder discount from the suppliers in excess of the cost of the service charged by Humphrey Homes, but exactly what we wanted in respect of the feel of the home.

Lastly, we would also like to say: in a time when there is a lot of talk is about construction delays due to tradesman shortages and issues with supply of materials, with our build there was almost never a day when something was not happening on the site. Again, this is testimony to the loyalty and dedication of all the staff and all subcontractors working for Humphrey Homes!

We loved the whole process and would recommend Humphrey Homes to anyone wanting a home that meets their expectations and just delivers what they want!

We are delighted with Humphrey Homes and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them. We wanted a builder who would integrate the architectural, building and interior design phases seamlessly, and Humphrey Homes did this perfectly.

From our initial meeting, right through to handing over the keys, we have been impressed by their consistently excellent communication, both within their team and with us. They fixed potential issues before we even knew about them, and presented us with solutions rather than problems. Their ability to listen to what we wanted, design our home to fit our needs and make suggestions which matched our taste and style, meant that our experience building was stress-free; and all within our budget. We learnt very quickly that we could trust the Humphrey team’s decisions on design, practicality and style, inside our home and out. We knew they would include all the detail required to make our home happen. This meant we didn’t have to deal with the technical and logistical challenges that we had no expertise in or time to sort through.

Another area they excelled in was the site management; liaising with our neighbours, communicating the challenges and offering solutions to help us maintain positive relationships was outstanding. The site team coordinated all aspects of the build so that our neighbours said on several occasions “the place is always so clean and tidy” and “I’m so pleased you are building with Humphrey Homes”. Our home was built so quickly, and with no delays, because the Humphrey’s team managed the build like clockwork. We received fortnightly email updates to explain completed work and to outline what was next. This helped us to feel part of the process. It helped us to be connected to the team and to our new home. Every time we drove past, the build had visibly progressed. So many of our friends and colleagues commented about the speed of our build, many saying things like “That’s the first time I’ve heard of someone whose build is not delayed”. All the tradespeople on site were highly skilled experts – they were knowledgeable, perfectionistic and took genuine pride in their work. Again – outstanding!

We chose Humphrey Homes because of their reputation for designing and building to an exceptional standard, with excellent quality of workmanship, in a seamless and integrated journey. Even with that knowledge, they have far-exceeded our expectations. We would build with them again tomorrow and recommend them without hesitation.

Completion of our home in December 2024 represented the culmination of a conceptualisation, design and build project that commenced in August 2022. We could not be more pleased with our home and cannot recommend Dean and his team highly enough. They are a client-centric organisation and everyone involved has clearly signed up to Dean’s vision around client satisfaction, creativity and quality. It was inspiring to be involved in a collaboration with the Humphrey Homes team that resulted in a spectacular home beyond our expectations.

Our first contact with Humphrey Homes involved a meeting with Dean. It was a two-way meeting where we felt equal parties, discussing mutual obligations, expectations and processes. We gleaned from this meeting that the prospect of engaging the Humphrey’s team would result in a classy build resulting from a high standard of professionalism, and a collaboration – exactly what we were looking for; one where there was mutual trust, respect and open communication. This level of professionalism and transparency existed throughout the build process – the Humphrey’s team was finely tuned from beginning to end.

We were immediately impressed by the unique styling of each home they build. Dean and Helen made it clear that each project they take on is a reflection of the unique qualities of each client. Both were enthusiastic to hear our vision and create a design that reflected our individual style and personality.

Helen, our Architect was intuitive in capturing our, at that stage, vague thoughts and creating the house of our dreams. The sketch designs in the initial stages quickly took shape into a coherent design with which we fell in love. The foundations of the design came from Helen’s inquisitive approach, exploring our backgrounds, needs and tastes, and converting these to a coherent and beautiful design.

After the design process we were assigned our interior designer, Katie, who became our main interface between the building team. Katie’s commitment and expertise were instrumental in elevating our understanding and objectives, and bringing the house to life. Katie became our main point of contact in relation to all our selections. We were struck by her broad knowledge of materials and products which she cleverly integrated to fit our tastes and the style of our home.

Steve, Project Manager, was in the background coordinating all the action and was instrumental in ensuring that our house was completed according to the estimated build time. We appreciated the fortnightly reports from Steve that kept us informed of the milestones completed, the next major steps and of the overall progress. Our Build Supervisor (Shane) was constantly on the ground overseeing all the action, performing quality control and able to respond to our many questions.

Throughout the 15 months build we had the opportunity to interact with most of the tradespeople. Everyone we dealt with was a pleasure to work with and their quality of work was of a very high calibre. In fact, we’d class each as experts in their craft who took great pride in their work resulting in top quality finishes throughout our home. It is inspiring to be involved in a collaboration with craftspeople and to know that they take such pride in their work. It is a credit to Humphrey’s that they have identified these craftspeople, reflecting the exceptional standard of work that the company demands. In many instances, they in turn stated how proud they were to be engaged on Humphrey Homes projects.

Humphrey’s were also outstanding in their communication with our future neighbours and keeping them on side. This continued through the build process with the individual tradies, demonstrating a respectful manner in their dealings with everyone – something that our neighbours mentioned and appreciated.

It was clear over the duration of the build that the project was very carefully curated to ensure progress was achieved almost on a daily basis. Several of the trades praised the Humphrey’s team organization and coordination; liaising with each to set up dates, supplies and materials etc to keep the project on schedule.

In any large project ‘cost creep’ is front of mind. At the very first meeting Dean provided an estimate of the build cost on a per square metre basis – necessarily a ball-park figure based on his previous experience. A more refined estimate was provided when the design was finalized which was in line with the original pre-design estimate. With a design we loved and confidence around cost, we proceeded to working drawings leading to specifications, contracts and final costings. The final build estimate was again in line with expectations and we proceeded to contracts. There are many components where $ allowances were provided subject to our final selections. In our experience these allowances were very appropriate and provided for selection from a range of quality options befitting our home. It was unusual for the allowances to be exceeded unless we had some very specific high-end requirements. Overall, our final build price was less than 1 % above the contract price taking into account all our fitout and appliance selections – a great outcome considering the size and complexity of the project.

The entire build process and relationship with everyone in the Humphrey’s team could be epitomized as a stress-free, exciting and a joyful experience! It was genuinely a pleasure to be associated with this professional team from design concept and to see this interpreted by the full team to completion.
