Building bespoke dreams

This home is definitely not for sale. Bespoke builder Dean Humphrey, of Humphrey Homes, always fends off offers from visitors attending Open House events.

“It happens at every home viewing we have ever done,” he said.

“We open the home to potential clients for a weekend before the owners move in. At every one, someone wants to buy the home and makes an offer during a walkthrough.

“No owner has ever accepted.”

Humphrey Homes is a bespoke and architectural builder with eight to 10 high end homes under construction at any one time, almost all of them in the western suburbs.

“Our goal is always to have a champagne with the client at the end of the process,” Mr Humphrey said.

“Trust is paramount. These are forever homes. We want our clients to build once, do it extremely well and enjoy the process.

“For more than half our clients it is their first build. Each home is designed specifically for that family and they connect with our architect Helen Marchesani and myself at the very first meeting.

“There are no surprises regarding design or budget during the process. Our team is in-house and we are discussing each project every day.

“Our trades are craftsmen who have been working with us for decades and that is how they have the experience to get the details of the home right.”

The arches throughout are a reminder of the home previously on the site.

The South Perth house is the home of Humphrey Homes’ in-house interior designer Katie Bossong.

“We bought the property planning to renovate the Spanish mission style house that was here,” she said.

“As we went through the design process, we came to realise that wasn’t possible, but we still have echoes of that home in the use of arches internally and in the external arched doors.

“We wanted to build a comfortable, refined and inviting home that showcases the detail in the materials and cabinet work, rather than over decoration.

“We’ve used natural stone and oak floors throughout and I think moving in will be life-changing for our family.”

The home is beautifully designed for a family with separate living and entertaining areas, a mudroom, designer kitchen and butler’s pantry, a gym and basketball court, a homework area in the upstairs lounge, a separate study and main bedroom suite.

Mr Humphrey said the South Perth home had a great feel to it. “We aim to build homes that are timeless for that person or family, and I think this home is that,” he said.

“It has a warmth and sophistication, as well as all the custom features you could want.”

A Humphrey Homes project budget sits somewhere in the $3 million to $7 million range, with design and approval taking around 12 months, and build times around two years.

“I love the homes we build and would happily live in any of them,” Mr Humphrey said.
