ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING BY HUMPHREY HOMES

City Beach is famous for its mid-century modern Games Village homes, that were in turn inspired by the Case Study Houses of 1950s and 60s. With this rich architectural heritage in mind, our in-house Architect, Helen Marchesani, designed this low-slung home as a contemporary take on Modernist ideals.

The architecture references key themes of the Case Study Houses - clean horizontal lines, the easy flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, a focus on natural light, and the extensive use of timber, stone and glass.

The 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home is designed to hug the gently sloping site. In keeping with its modernist spirit this single level home is deliberately unassuming from the street, however it has strength in form, scale and materiality.

It presents an introverted façade to the exterior, with timber battening shrouding the front elevation. Once inside however, it opens up to an extroverted home that embraces the northern aspect and garden outlook.

The front of the home is anchored by a self-contained apartment, with the option of a separate entrance. Deliberately private, it looks towards the street and not the rear of the home. Beyond this are the public areas of the home – the kitchen, living and dining. The open floor plan and wall-to-wall glazing create an easy flow between internal and external spaces. An arbour and alfresco wrap the home, for sun control in the warmer months.

A glass-walled gallery runs from the public spaces to the bedrooms and two studies – ensuring all main living rooms have a garden outlook. Feature timber beams line the gallery ceiling and connect to the external arbour, reinforcing the link between inside and out.

The master suite is positioned at the rear of the house for privacy and enjoys views over the garden, pool, and cabana.

Owner/Director Dean Humphrey notes every Humphrey Homes design is bespoke and addresses the way the owner likes to live: “Our clients wanted us to design and build them a ‘forever home.’ As they currently live in London, lots of natural light and warmth is a priority – as is keeping the home to single level.

“Having clients living overseas during the design and build stage means we’ve all become very comfortable with TEAMS meetings!

“This home will be an absolute gem and we can't wait to experience the finished result.’’
