Cottesloe Residence

Architecture and building by Humphrey Homes

Block size: 716 SQM
Build Time: 14 months

This growing family of five wanted a home that would provide stylish entertaining and hospitality spaces coupled with a private and tranquil family domain. The result is this grand two-storey home which takes advantage of the large, north-facing sloping block to create unique living spaces that capitalise on views and natural light.

The entrance porch on the first floor is the first taste of the modern and relaxing style of this house. Connecting to the generous verandah which runs the length of the first floor, the couple’s desire to capture the style and feel of the Raffles (Cambodia), the Metropole (Hanoi) and safari lodges (South Africa) is expressed through a classic plantation style with a modern twist. A refined black and white palette is featured throughout the deep verandah, with the floorboards, balustrades, weatherboards and shutters to the french doors highlighted with sleek precision and providing a refined backdrop for the views to nature beyond, including a vibrant jacaranda tree.

As the verandah wraps around the first floor, the balcony itself becomes a grand outdoor room, complete with a modern outdoor kitchen that connects seamlessly with the commercial kitchen inside. Capturing the stunning views of Cottesloe beach and sunsets on Perth’s balmy summer evenings, the kitchen, dining and balcony provide a stylish and relaxed space for this large family to entertain and unwind. The first floor also accommodates a guest bedroom and ensuite, while the family’s bedrooms, theatre room, private swimming pool and outdoor areas are located downstairs. A more secluded setting, the modern classic plantation style is continued on this level, with french doors opening off each bedroom and the crisp palette of black and white expressed throughout, including more opulent features, such as the stunning black marble in the master ensuite.

Not only do the family and their guests find delight in this beautiful home, the Railway Road Residence has received numerous awards

Friends are surprised when we use ‘positive’ and ‘building’ in the same sentence. The truth is however, building with Dean was a very positive experience. There were no surprises or cost blowouts. Nothing was lost in translation. Humphrey Homes understood the initial feel and vision from the outset and managed it really well from right through to the end. We definitely got what we wanted.
