The owners wanted a new house that met the requirements for contemporary living but one that sat comfortably and timelessly in its Peppermint Grove streetscape. With two children, they also wanted spaces to which each generation could retreat, resulting in the entire ground floor being designed for adults, and the upper level for the kids.
The three-level house was designed to appear single storey from the street and was based on the Queen Anne Federation homes of the area. Attention to detail was essential to avoid a simple pastiche of that style. Particular attention was given to custom timber doors, windows, stairs, jarrah flooring, posts and timber ceilings. Period details give the house a sense of character and authenticity, such as arched window heads, recessed rendered bands, pebbled ash gables and verandah posts with capital moulds and shaped brackets.
The home boasts a large, open plan kitchen and dining area opening outwards to a picturesque alfresco. The sloping block offers elevated views across the pool to the sensitively landscaped garden, including three established pine trees at the rear of the property and a dedicated area for occasional marquee entertaining. Internally, the house provides a range of customized spaces, including a light-filled study and library, a climate controlled cellar for the owner’s extensive wine collection, and a storage area for spinnaker sails.
