South Perth is home to some of Perth’s best-preserved examples of Moderne architecture, such as the iconic Cygnet Cinema. Designed and built by Humphrey Homes for a growing family, this 4-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom residence draws inspiration from the clients’ original 1930s home on the site and the suburb’s rich architectural heritage.

With the home’s enticing curved entry and elevation, graceful arches and clean horizontal lines, Humphrey Homes’ in-house architect, Helen Marchesani, has created a modern take on Moderne.

Slimline profile white bricks and white timber panelling, paired with black steel framed doors and arched window frames give the front elevation a feeling of relaxed, sophistication.

In response to the 5-metre fall of the site, the home is built over three levels. On the ground or middle level, curved walls guide visitors into the formal front entry.

The architecture riffs on rounded shapes - an archway is extruded to form a vaulted ceiling, creating an intimate entry to the master suite. Arches are used to define zones and frame views.

To create connectivity with the outdoors on a sloping site, the entertaining deck and pool are raised to the same level as the main living area and kitchen. An arbour wrapping the back of the home creates sun protection while strengthening the connection to the garden.

Beneath this area, on the basement level overlooking the basketball court and landscaped gardens, is a gym that has the flexibility to become a self-contained apartment in the future.

On the upper level are two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and an additional living area.

This site-specific residence respects what has gone before, while creating a timeless family home that will delight for years to come.
